CHARROUX, LA MÉDIÉVALE "PLUS BEAUX VILLAGES DE FRANCE"

"Most beautiful villages in France" label, Town

20 rue grande
03140 Charroux

Unaccompanied tour or tour with audioguide. Charroux has a beautiful 17th century church, sculpted façades from the 15th and 18th centuries, and a circular layout that reflects its history as a fortified city. When Charroux became a ""ville franche"" (free city) in 1245, it had a bourgeois class of rich merchants and intellectuals. The street names reflect the active life of the era. The tour introduces visitors to the Porte d'Orient, the Porte de l'Horloge and its bell tower from the 13th and 14th centuries, the 19th century covered market and the oldest house in the village, which dates back to the 14th century.
